GCA Advises Asahi Fire & Marine Insurance on Its Sale to Rakuten

GCA is pleased to announce our client Asahi Fire & Marine Insurance, a property and casualty insurer, agreed to be acquired by global e-commerce company Rakuten for approximately $412 million.

A subsidiary of Nomura Holdings Inc., Asahi Fire & Marine Insurance (“Asahi”) provides home, property, travel and other insurance products to its customers.

Rakuten Inc., one of the world’s leading internet service companies, encompasses over 70 businesses spanning e-commerce, banking, communications, travel and insurance. The Rakuten ecosystem touches over 1.2 billion people worldwide, from its almost 100 million Rakuten members in Japan to fans of the Rakuten-sponsored Golden State Warriors and FC Barcelona.

The acquisition will give customers of Rakuten’s existing businesses the opportunity to insure themselves against the potential risks associated with their purchases. Additionally, Asahi’s offerings will complement and expand Rakuten’s existing FinTech businesses and services.

GCA acted as exclusive financial advisor to Asahi on this transaction. The transaction is subject to closing conditions.
